Julia Wilkinson claims Women’s 100m freestyle gold - Canadian Olympic & Paralympic Trials
Julia Wilkinson of IS claimed gold medal of the Women’s 100m freestyle on day five of the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Trials in Montreal on Saturday, March 31.
Wilkinson experienced strong competition from her closest rival, Victoria Poon in the double lap event but with her alluring efforts, she managed to outperform her over the finishing end for gold medal.
She remained just one stroke ahead of her following swimmer and posted a time of 54.73 seconds for gold medal. The champion was followed by Poon, who stayed 0.13 seconds slower from her and produced a time of 54.86 seconds for silver medal.
Heather MacLean of VAND remained 0.20 seconds behind her former finisher and settled on the finishing end for bronze medal by touching the wall in a time of 55.06 seconds.
MacLean was chased by Samantha Cheverton of PCSC, who tried hard to overpower her preceding swimmer on the finishing end for bronze medal but remained just marginally slower and finished fourth. Cheverton stayed 0.18 seconds away from overwhelming MacLean’s effort and hit the wall with the timing of 55.24 seconds.
She was followed by Sandrine Mainville of PPO, who occupied fifth finishing spot of the race by completing her race in a time of 55.34 seconds.
Her phenomenal effort was chased by Erica Morningstar, who remained 0.10 seconds slower from her foregoing finisher and completed her race in a time of 55.44 seconds to finish sixth in the discipline.
Morningstar also faced strong contest from Amanda Reason of ESWIM, who proved her eligibility for the seventh best place of the event. Reason suffered a loss of only 0.09 seconds from Morningstar and tapped the finishing end with the timing of 55.53 seconds for seventh position.
The last spot of the event was secured by Jennifer Beckberger of WD, who remained 0.17 seconds behind Reason and settled on the finishing blockade as eighth position holder by producing an effort of 55.70 seconds.
In addition, the session came to an end after the completion of all planned events while Wilkinson was overjoyed after clinching gold medal of the 100m discipline.
