Julia Wilkinson earns Women’s 100m backstroke gold: Day two - Canadian Olympic & Paralympic Trials
Julia Wilkinson of IS earned gold medal of the Women’s 100m backstroke on second day of the Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Trials in Montreal on Wednesday, March 28.
Wilkinson faced strong contest from Sinead Russell of BWSC, in the double lap backstroke event but she succeeded in sustaining her fastest qualification spot in the final round and seized the podium for gold medal.
Russell demonstrated her immaculate efforts in the first lap, where she ended her first round in a fastest time of 29.32 seconds. Her effort remained 0.09 seconds ahead of Wilkinson, who wrapped up the equivalent distance by clocking a time of 29.41 seconds.
Wilkinson elevated her efforts in the second half of the swim and emerged on the finishing wall for gold medal by clocking a time of 59.85 seconds. She remained 0.60 seconds ahead of her strongest challenger, Russell, who settled on the finishing end for
silver medal by posting 1 minute and 00.45 seconds.
The third spot of the backstroke discipline was secured by Hilary Caldwell of PSW, who hit the finishing wall with the timing of 1 minute and 00.77 seconds.
The bronze medallist stayed 0.32 seconds ahead of Dominique Bouchard of NBYT, who ended her swim in fourth place by posting a time of 1 minute and 01.09 seconds. Bouchard was chased by Genevieve Cantin of UL, who occupied fifth best spot of the discipline
by completing her swim in a time of 1 minute and 01.96 seconds.
Brooklynn Snodgrass of CASC stayed just 0.04 seconds slower from her former finisher and ended sixth by producing an effort of 1 minute and 02.00 seconds. Katelyn Murdoch of UCSC claimed seventh position of the discipline as she posted an effort of 1 minute
and 02.54 seconds.
Subsequently, Murdoch remained in a lead of 0.23 seconds over Gabrielle Soucisse of PPO, who finished her swim in eighth fastest place by submitting a time of 1 minute and 02.77 seconds.
The session ended after the conclusion of all planned events while the position holders were invited on the victory stand for medals and accolades at prize distribution ceremony.
