Julian Reister wipes out Denis Istomin in the first round – International German Open 2011
The International German Open 2011 is underway with its 1st round matches as Julian Reister, the home player, clashed his racquet against Denis Istomin of Uzbekistan in a 3 setter to 2nd round. The match was
played on the centre clay circuit at the Rothenbaum Tennis Centre, Hamburg, Germany. It is by far the largest court in Germany occupying more than 13,000 fans each fixture.
Julian Reister has been a pro tennis player since 2005 currently ranked as World No.155. The 25 year-old describes himself as an aggressive baseliner. Considering the forehand as his best shot, the German has been a little too
aggressive in his last 10 matches that led him to win only 2 matches out of the previous 10. However, this match seemed a lucky shot for the German.
Rivalling the German home star was the Uzbek international Denis Istomin. At 24 year of age he is currently ranked at world No.70 by the ATP world rankings. Formerly at World No.39, the Uzbek is tough on baselines and serves. Nicknamed
“Deni”, Istomin has been much successful on hard courts. Considering that, the Rothenbaum Circuit was surely a disadvantage for the Uzbek.
The match kicked off with the home star opening serve and the score card at 1-0. Deni followed the local player to level the scores to 1-1. With a blink of an eye, Julian made the scores 3-1 as he won game 3 and 4 with a breakpoint.
The match got exciting as both played repeatedly won breakpoints in game 5 and 6 to read the score card 4-2 to Julian. The German increased his lead to 5-2 in the next game. The hard court player could retrieve one more game after that the world No.155 took
the next game and the set 6-3 to lead the match 1-0.
With second set proving to be a decider for Deni, he served first to open up the score 1-0. However, following the Uzbek, Julian perfected his moves. Levelling the scores each time the scores went on to 2-2 with Denis to serve
next. The Hard Court boy made his only mistake in game 14 of the match that led him to lose the match. The German won a breakpoint on Deni’s serve and won the next game to lead 4-2. There was no stopping Julian then until the last game when the score card
read 6-4 to Julian. The final score read 6-3, 6-4 much to the delight of the local crowd.
Winning in straight sets, Julian now moves into the 2nd round of the International German Open 2011 to play the Spaniard Guillermo Garcia Lopez for a spot in the quarter-finals.
