Julian Wilson and Adrian Buchan survive Round 2 of Oakley Pro Bali – Surfing news
Australia’s Julian Wilson and his compatriot Adrian Buchan successfully secured their place in Round 3 of Oakley Pro Bali after claiming victory in their respective Round 2 heats that went down at Keramas in Bali, Indonesia, on Wednesday, June 19, 2013.
Wilson extended his life in stop no.5 of the 2013 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour by getting the better of Brazil’s Raoni Monteiro in heat 7 of Round 2, thus bringing the competition to a premature end for his rival.
Buchan, on the other hand, put on an authoritative performance in heat 8 to get the better of and eliminate his fellow countryperson Adam Melling, while securing his place in Round 3.
There was a bit of a hold-up in the proceedings somewhere around noon due to swell readjustment, but the surfing action resumed soon after, much to the relief of the huge crowd that was in attendance at the main reef of Keramas to watch the best in the business
put their skills and experience on their display.
After faltering in their Round 1 affair, both Wilson and Monteiro were determined to make amends and see themselves through into the third round. Pitted against each other in the seventh heat, both of them were expected to come hard at each other.
The 24-year-old Australian, however, showed a greater amount of determination as the battle got underway. Locking his first business-wave, he posted an 8.87 on the score-board to put his rival under pressure and went on to add an additional 6.83 points to
his account, thus finished with a decisive heat-total of 15.70 points.
“I feel like I’m warming up a bit,” Wilson said. ‘I had a good first heat and got unlucky at the end. I was fired up. had a good free surf before, there are lots of fun sections and that put me in a good frame of mind heading into the heat. I wasn’t looking
for a perfect wave, just taking a lot of opportunities and it worked out well for me. Surfing out here is so much fun.”
Monteiro struggled to find his form yet again and only managed to collect a 6.90 and 5.87 off his top-two waves to register a heat-total of 12.77 points. The score was hardly adequate under the circumstances and therefore forced him to make a premature exit
from the competition.
The next heat saw Buchan stamp his authority over Melling in their man-on-man battle for survival, giving the latter hardly any chance to bounce back.
Buchan unloaded a combination of exquisite manoeuvres on his first business-wave to earn a 9.63 for the effort and soon backed it up with a 6.69-point ride, thus finishing with a heat-total of 17.13 points.
Melling responded with an ordinary two-wave total of 10.44 points, which included a 5.67 and 4.77-point ride. He was consequently forced to surrender victory to his compatriot while exiting the competition.
