Julian Wilson and Daniel Ross survive Round 2 of Rip Curl Pro Search – 2011 ASP World Tour
The thrilling action continued at the Ocean Beach in San Francisco, America, as Australia’s Julian Wilson took on America’s Taylor Clark in the third, while Australia’s Daniel Ross squared off with Tahiti’s Michel Bourez in the fourth heat of Rip Curl Pro
Search San Francisco’s Round 2 on Tuesday, November 1.
Wilson treated the crowd to an impressive performance during the third heat and eventually prevailed over Clark to go through into Round 3, consequently eliminating the latter from the competition.
The fourth heat saw Ross prevail over Bourez with a convincing margin to advance through into Round 3, bringing the competition to a premature end for his rival.
The young Australian prodigy, Wilson, had been making waves throughout the 2011 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour so far. The elite tour rookie gave the heavy weights of surfing a run for their money at nearly every stop and did not fail
to catch the eyes of the critics through a series of remarkable performances. He was expected to make a solid impact during his Round 1 heat, but he failed to live up to the expectations and ended up getting relegated to the second round, where he had to compete
with Clark for the Round 3 spot.
As the third heat of Round 2 got underway, the 22-year-old Wilson wasted no time in taking control of the heat with a 6.40-point wave. He kept the charge going and added an additional 7.17 points to his account, moving to a heat-total of 13.57 points.
Clark continued to struggle in the waves on offer at Ocean Beach and faltered for the second time in less than 12 hours. Fishing a 5.83 and 2.93 off his top-two waves, he finished with a heat-total of 8.76 points, consequently conceding victory to his Australian
rival.
The action continued with the fourth heat, which saw Ross take on Bourez in a battle for survival. Both the surfers had looked extremely promising during their Round 1 heat, though they had failed to clinch top honours and thus had to compete in Round 2.
As the battle kicked off, Bourez drew first blood with a 6.83-point wave, taking an early advantage over Ross. However, the latter soon bounced back with an 8.00-point wave and later added an additional 6.00 points to his account, finishing with a two-wave
total of 14.00 points.
Bourez made a desperate effort on his final wave to try and earn the score necessary for the win, though the effort turned out to be in vain. He only managed to score 5.17 points off his final wave to finish with a heat-total of 12.00 points, consequently
allowing Ross to advance through into the next Round.
