Julian Wilson and David do Carmo reach quarter-finals at Mr Price Pro Ballito – Surfing news
Australia’s Julian Wilson and Brazil’s David do Carmo moved into the quarter-finals at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Prime Mr Price Pro Ballito after overcoming their rivals in their respective Round 5 (Round of 16) battles that took place
at Ballito, South Africa, on Friday, July 5, 2013.
Wilson earned his place in the next stage of the competition by besting Brazil’s Jadson Andre in the fifth heat, forcing to latter to make a premature exit from the competition as a result.
The sixth heat saw America’s Kolohe Andino succumbing to Do Carmo in the final minutes of the heat, thus sending the latter into the next round while getting eliminated from the competition himself.
The battles for a place in the final eight continued in powerful two-metre surf that was on offer at the primary event site on the latest day of the Mr Price Pro Ballito, which was the third of eight events on the 2013 ASP Prime calendar.
Wilson has been showcasing a solid form since the start of the latest ASP Prime event and he successfully held on to the momentum to register yet another impressive win in the fifth heat, which had him pitted against Andre in a battle for the quarter-final
spot.
The Australian surfer adapted to the conditions early in the heat and soon locked his first business-wave to post a 6.83 on the score-board. Continuing his determined hunt for another decent score, he only managed to add another 6.70 points to his account,
thus moving to a heat-total of 11.53 points.
Andre responded with a heat-total of 10.33 points, which comprised of a 4.00 and 6.33-point ride. The effort turned out to be significantly inadequate, thus forcing him to surrender the win and consequently the quarter-final spot to his rival.
The final heat of the day featured Do Carmo locking horns with the Californian sensation Andino for a place in the next round.
The Brazilian surfer got off to a relatively slow start, but gradually built momentum as the heat progressed. His perseverance and persistence eventually got rewarded as he managed to earn a 7.33 off his first business-wave. He immediately backed it up with
a 6.87-point ride, thus getting to a heat-total of 14.20 points.
Andino locked many waves, but none of his attempts got him the score that he was looking for. Scoring a 4.00 and 1.50 off his top-two waves, the American surfer finished on a heat-total of 5.50 points, thus tasting defeat and consequently getting eliminated
from Mr Price Pro Ballito.
