Julian Wilson and Jeremy Flores move to Round 3 at Billabong Pro Tahiti
Australia’s Julian Wilson and France’s Jeremy Flores successfully made it through into the third round at Billabong Pro Tahiti, the fifth of ten stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour, after emerging triumphant
in their respective Round 2 heats that went down at Teahupo’o in Taiarapu, Tahiti, on Friday, August 17.
Wilson got the better of Brazil’s Willian Cardoso in the third heat to advance to the third round, bringing the event to an early end for his rival in the process.
The fourth heat saw Hawaii’s Dusty Payne succumb to an excellent performance put on by Flores, consequently getting eliminated from the competition while sending the latter into the next round.
The latest day of the competition saw three-to-four foot waves breaking at the primary event site, presenting the elite surfers with plenty of potent opportunities to put their exquisite skills on display. There was plenty of reason to push hard during their
latest battle as a failure to clinch victory elimination from the competition.
The third heat saw Wilson and Cardoso square-off in a man-on-man battle for the Round 3 spot. Both the surfers had failed to make much of an impact during their Round 1 heat, but could not afford to put on another lacklustre performance.
Wilson opened his account with a mediocre 3.83-point ride and went on to add an additional 7.67 off his second business-wave to finish with a heat-total of 11.50 points.
Cardoso responded with a 5.83 and 1.10 off his best-two waves to finish with a resultant heat-total of 6.93 points. This resulted in a premature end to his pursuit of the event title.
The fourth heat featured a pretty one-sided contest as Flores stole the show with his outstanding performance while Payne failed to offer any significant challenge.
The French surfer scored an 8.33 off his first business-wave and added an additional 9.17 off his second business-wave to finish with a heat-total of 17.50 points.
In response, Payne only managed to reach a heat-total of 8.73 points, which comprised of a 0.13 and 8.60-point ride. The effort was far from enough to challenge the mammoth-sized score of his rival.
