Julian Wilson and Owen Wright survive Round 3 of Quiksilver Pro New York – 2011 ASP World Tour
The intense surfing action continued to entertain the fans with the 11th and 12th heat of Quiksilver Pro New York’s Round 3 that went down at the Long Beach, New York, on Thursday morning, September 8.
The 11th heat saw the progressive surfer from Australia, Julian Wilson, take down America’s Brett Simpson to guarantee his place in the fourth round, removing his opponent from the competition in the process.
Australia’s Owen Wright came up with a sensational performance in the 12th heat to defeat America’s CJ Hobgood and make his way into Round 4. The defeat resulted in the elimination of the latter from the competition.
The 22-year-old Wilson had been looking extremely impressive throughout the current 2011 Association of Surfing Professional (ASP) World Tour and is definitely a surfer to look out for in the coming years. After getting off to an ideal start at the latest
stop of the elite tour, he found himself pitted against Simpson in Round 3.
As the 11 heat kicked off, both the surfers took their time to warm up to the conditions and slowly built up momentum. Simpson was the first to catch his first business-wave, earning 5.07 points off it to take the lead. He soon followed it up with an impressive
7.50-point wave to finish with a heat-total of 12.57 points.
The 22-year-old Wilson came across a real juicy wave in the final minutes of the heat to collect 7.23-points off it. He immediately followed it up with an even more impressive wave, pulling off a set of classy tricks on it to earn 7.80 points. The second
business-wave took his heat-total to 15.03 points, 2.46 points ahead of his American rival. As a result, Simpson was forced to step aside as Wilson made his way into Round 4.
The final heat of Round 3 turned out to be a one-man show with the 21-year-old Wright completely stealing the lime-light with his exceptional performance, making Hobgood look completely helpless during the 30-minute bout.
Looking good since the start, Wright caught a wave halfway through the heat to exhibit his class and style through a string of amazing tricks, earning 8.87 points for the effort. He went on to lock another wave in the dying minutes of the heat and this time
sent both the crowd as well as the judges in awe with his exquisite stunt. He collected a near-perfect wave-score of 9.80 points for the effort to finish with an intimidating heat-total of 18.67 points. The score remained unbeatable till the end and carried
him off to victory and hence the fourth round.
Hobgood seemed stunned by the onslaught of his rampaging Australian rival. While attempting to beat such a mammoth-sized score, he only managed to get to a heat-total of 11.77 points, which comprised of a 6.27 and 5.50-point wave.
