Julian Wilson claims comprehensive victory in Round 2 of Volcom Fiji Pro – Surfing News
Australia’s Julian Wilson claimed victory in the fourth heat of Round 2 at the fourth of ten stops on the 2012 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship Tour, Volcom Fiji Pro that went down at the main venue of Cloudbreak in Tavarua,
Fiji, on Monday, June 4.
The success in Round 2 served to carry Wilson into the third round, while his rival Patrick Gudauskas from American from the contention for the event title.
“Conditions are really good today,” Wilson said. “It’s pretty perfect. I had a crappy time yesterday and was really frustrated. It felt good to have that good start. My first wave was good and then I backed it up with another one. It felt great to have a
couple of scores and to get that heat under the belt.”
The four-to-six foot waves gracing the primary event site on the second day of the competition offered plenty of potent scoring opportunity to the world’s best surfers as they competed with utmost determination to try and extend their life in the competition.
More than half the competition field had been relegated to Round 2 following their Round 1 defeat.
The fourth heat of Round 2 pitted Wilson against Gudauskas in a man-on-man battle for the Round 3 spot. With the pressure of elimination hanging over the head of both the surfers, a heavy dose of thrilling action was expected during the showdown.
As the heat got underway, Wilson wasted absolutely no time to stamp his authority over his rival. Getting hold of his first business-wave, the 23-year-old Australian sensation unloaded a series of exquisite tricks to post a 9.10 on the score-board. Keeping
the momentum going, he backed it up with another impressive 9.47-point ride to move to a heat-total of 18.57 points.
Gudauskas failed to offer a solid response to his rival. Scoring a 4.50 off his first business-wave, he only managed to back it up with a 3.00-point wave, thus finishing with a heat-total of 7.50 points. The lacklustre performance caused him to concede a
comprehensive victory to Wilson, sending the latter into the third round of the latest ASP World Tour event.
