Julian Wilson defeats Fredrick Patacchia in Round 5 of Quiksilver Pro New York – 2011 ASP World Tour
The latest stop of 2011 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, Quiksilver Pro New York, continued to deliver intense surfing action with the fourth heat of Round 5 on Thursday, September 8, at Long Beach, New York.
After a real nail-biting contest, Australia’s Julian Wilson managed to prevail over Hawaii’s Fredrick Patacchia, though just barely, to secure the quarter-final spot on offer and removing his opponent from the competition in the process.
Despite getting off to a great start at Quiksilver Pro New York, the 21-year-old Wilson failed to continue his momentum during his Round 4 battle and ended up losing to his compatriot, Owen Wright, getting relegated to the fifth round as a result. After
looking at his performance over the last few months, one expected the progressive Australian surfer to at least reach the quarter-finals at the current stop of the elite tour.
In order to advance to the next stage of the competition, Wilson had to survive his Round 5 battle against Patacchia, another surfer who had looked extremely promising during the initial rounds. The battle was never going to be an easy one for the Australian
and to make matters even worse, the surfing conditions did not turn out to be anything close to ideal either.
As the battle for the quarter-final spot commenced, Patacchia got off to an impressive start, locking a wave early in the heat to pull off an exquisite manoeuvre and added 7.17 points to his account. Wilson went through a series of waves before eventually
catching a wave to pull off a series of impressive tricks, earning 8.00 points for the effort and taking the lead.
As the heat progressed, both the surfers continued to hunt for another good score to raise their chances of making it into the next round. Wilson managed to add an additional 5.97 points to his account in the final minutes of the heat to reach a heat-total
of 13.97 points.
Patacchia required 6.80 points off his second business-wave to take the win. He made a determined and desperate effort on his final wave of the heat to get the required score, but only managed to earn 6.10 points off it. This resulted in his finishing with
a heat-total of 13.27 points, consequently surrendering victory to Wilson.
The victory allowed Wilson to move into the quarter-final, where he would compete against his compatriot Wright once again in order to get closer to the event title.
