Julian Wilson defeats Joel Parkinson in fourth Quarter-Final of Hurley Pro – 2011 ASP World Tour
Fans kept getting treated to a heavy dose of thrilling action on the fourth day of the 2011 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, Hurley Pro, as the event came down to the fourth Quarter-Final that was held at the iconic point-break of Lower
Trestles in California, America, on Wednesday, September 21.
The battle was expected to be a real nail-biting contest between Australian surfers, Joel Parkinson and Julian Wilson, as both were in the best of forms, but the latter managed to make it a rather one-sided affair through his epic performance and advanced
through to the Semi-Finals.
Parkinson had been nothing short of outstanding during the current season of the ASP elite tour with a handful of good results - which included an overall victory at Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach in April. That win moved him to the Number Three spot on the ASP
World Title Rankings. He was keeping the momentum going at the latest event as well, and cruised through the early rounds to eventually make it into the Quarter-Finals.
His opponent, Wilson, was yet another Australian who has been making a solid impact in the ASP World Tour so far. The young and progressive surfer is proving to be a formidable talent and possesses an ability to come up with amazing performances in crucial
situations. He had been sensational at Hurley Pro so far and the only blow that he had taken so far was at the hands of Parkinson in Round 4. Pitted against him in the Quarter-Final, Wilson got himself a shot at vengeance.
As the fourth Quarter-Final kicked-off, both surfers got-off to a determined start and began to catch wave after wave in search for a good score. Almost halfway through the heat, Parkinson locked a wave to score 8.00 points off it and take the lead. The
joy was short-lived though, as Wilson almost immediately responded with an impressive 8.50-point wave to move ahead on the scoreboard.
The 22-year-old Wilson immediately locked another wave to unleash a string of exquisite manoeuvres, earning 9.73 points for the effort and moving to a heat-total of 18.23 points. With victory moving pretty much out of his reach, Parkinson added another 6.93
points to his account and finished with a heat-total of 14.93 points.
The outstanding performance by Wilson allowed him to collect a comfortable win and sent him through to the Semi-Finals.
