Julian Wilson dominates Miguel Pupo in Round 3 of Quiksilver Pro France – 2011 ASP World Tour
The latest stop of the 2011 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour, Quiksilver Pro France, continued to deliver a heavy dose of exciting action to the fans with the ninth heat of Round 3, which pitted Australia’s Julian Wilson against Brazil’s Miguel Pupo in a battle for the Round 4 spot.
While the encounter between the two young surfers was expected to be real tight, it turned out to be pretty one-sided instead, with Wilson prevailing over Pupo without much of an effort. The outcome of the contest sent the Australian through into the next round, while eliminating his Brazilian opponent from the competition.
The 22-year-old Wilson has been under the radar for quite some time now due to his exceptional performances at both, the ASP World Tour as well as the ASP Prime events. The new generation of surfers has already began to give the super-stars of the last decade a run for their money and managed to attract more attention than the latter during the current season of the ASP elite tour. Wilson is an epitome of the young force that is threatening to take over and justifies the hype surrounded that surrounds him by consistently coming up with one exquisite performance after another under any conditions.
The young Australian has looked in top form at La Graviere so far, getting off to a perfect start with a Round 1 victory to jump straight into Round 3, where he found himself facing the young Brazilian force, Pupo, for survival.
Pupo himself has been making big waves in surfing over the last few months and is arguably a formidable opponent in the waves. Facing Wilson in Round 3, the Brazilian needed to surf according to his true potential in order to extend his life in the competition.
As the ninth heat of Round 3 got underway in the shifty five-foot waves, Wilson asserted his dominance over Pupo in the opening minutes of the battle, locking a wave to earn 6.00 points off it. The Brazilian got off to a shaky start and only managed to score a 4.17 off his first business wave.
As the heat progressed, the Brazilian added another mediocre score to his account, moving to a heat-total of 7.07 points. With the two-wave total hardly being a competitive one, Pupo kept searching for another decent score, but his luck seemed to have bailed on him, forcing him to settle for whatever score he currently had.
Wilson turned his rival’s fear into reality by making it apparent that the latter’s low heat-total was indeed insufficient and non-competitive. Scoring an impressive 7.33 off his final wave, the Australian finished with a heat-total of 13.33 points, defeating Pupo by a huge margin.
The comfortable win over the Brazilian in his Round 3 heat would have definitely given Wilson a huge confidence boost as he stepped into Round 4 to compete for the direct Quarter-Final spot.
