Julian Wilson emerges triumphant in Round 1 of Quiksilver Pro New York – 2011 ASP World Tour
Australia’s Julian Wilson came up with an outstanding performance on the opening day of Quiksilver Pro New York, defeating America’s Taylor Knox and Australia’s Kieren Perrow in the 12th heat of Round 1 on Tuesday, September 6, at the Long Beach,
New York.
The victory allowed Wilson to advance directly into Round 3, while Knox and Perrow headed to the relegation Round 2 after finishing in second and third place respectively.
The 22-year-old Wilson has been one of the most prominent rookies in the latest season of Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Tour so far and he managed to impress the crowd yet again with his performance in New York.
As the final heat of the first round kicked off in two-to-four foot waves at Long Beach, Wilson went through a series of waves before eventually locking a really juicy one to earn 8.00 points. In the dying minutes of the battle, he caught another wave to
pull off a string of stylish tricks, adding an additional 9.00 points to his account and moving to a heat-total of 17.00 points. The two-wave total sealed the fate of the heat in his favour and secured his place in the third round.
Talking to a reporter after his Round 1 win, Kerr said, “I tried not to watch Kersey [Josh Kerr] because I knew I'd try to over-surf. I started the heat how I wanted to, got a 5 and kind of built house on that. I made some silly mistakes, but I was pretty
lucky to get some scores at the end. I knew if I got some sort of finner or reverse I'd get a good score. I was pretty jittery in the beginning of the heat, but as soon as I got the good one I felt confident.”
Knox settled for second after scoring 6.93 points off his first wave and 5.67 off his second, finishing with a heat-total of 12.60 points. Perrow rounded out the third position after scoring a combined-total of 10.60 points off his two best waves.
Knox and Perrow will compete in the second round to extend their life in the event by securing a Round 3 spot when competition resumes on Wednesday.
