Juliane Schenk beats Aprilla Yuswandari in Women’s Singles round-of-16: Japan Open Super Series
Germany’s spirited shuttler, Juliane Schenk dug deep into her reserves to achieve victory in her Women’s Singles round-of-16 match against Aprilla Yuswandari of Indonesia at the 2011 Yonex Japan Open Super Series, on September 22, in Tokyo, Japan.
Schenk is currently enjoying Eighth position in the Women’s Singles world standings and she is also the eighth seed in the draw of Japan Open. She had to work hard in the pre-quarter-final battle against Aprilla, who played wonderful badminton against the
higher ranked German. However, Schenk remained successful in winning the match in three sets of 63 minutes.
The opening game of the match was wonderful, as the lower ranked Indonesian played a stunning game and put everything she had to win the battle. Schenk opened the game in a slower way, which helped her opponent to find her momentum.
Aprilla played positive badminton with a touch of wonderful finishing in her shots. The slow movement and wrong shot selection of Schenk in the first game caused her loss with the margin of 16-21 in 22 minutes.
Stung by the loss of opening game, Schenk strongly bounced back in the second set of the match by playing with a changed strategy. The German started to play a parallel game by executing pushes and smashes which forced Aprilla to get into a defensive position.
Until the interval, Schenk was in a comfortable position at 11-7.
After the break, the German remained on the winning track as she progressed in similar manner and made no mistake in securing the second game in just 17 minutes, with a margin of 21-14.
The final set of this Women’s Singles contest was absolutely stunning, as both ladies put up a fabulous show of top-quality badminton until the finishing point. The speed of the rallies was at the highest level, as both shuttlers employed their powerful
smashes throughout the set.
The score was at 20-20, when the Indonesian played some wrong strokes which helped Schenk to win the set by a 22-20 score in 24 minutes. This three-set battle finished-off in 63 minutes by a 16-21, 21-14 and 22-20 margin.
