Juliane Schenk defeats Pui Yin Yip in the first round of the All England Open Badminton Championship
Germany’s Juliane Schenk defeated Pui Yin Yip of Hong Kong, in the first round of the All England Open Badminton Championship 2011, at the National Indoor Arena, in Birmingham, England today.
The seventh seed German shuttler took 42 minutes to chuck out Pui Yin in a straight set battle. In the second round, Juliane will meet Chinese Taipei’s Hsiao Ma Pai, who emerged the winner against the team-mate, Shao Chieh Cheng in a thrilling three-set
match of 46 minutes.
The first set of the opening round match was the best fight of the day as both players remained close till the final moments of the game. The seeded German started the game in a confused way as she played many wrong strokes that put the opponent ahead on
the score board. Taipei’s lady kept the pace high right from the start of the set and managed to build a good lead of 9-5. However, Juliane reduced the lead till the interval where she was trailing behind at 10-11.
After the break, the German started to gear up the game by laying attacking strokes. Pui Yin also matched the speed and the score progressed with the equal pace from both sides and reached at the crucial stage of 20-20. Juliane controlled the rallies and
kept the shuttle c**k low by executing net shots, pushes and down the line smashes. Her aggressive play worked well and she scored the remaining two points in a row, and grabbed the first set by a tight margin of 22-20. The opening set took 22 minutes of hard
labour from both sides.
In the second game, the German lady controlled the game right from the start. Pui Yin gradually became slow in her reflexes till the interval where the number seven seed was ahead by 11-9. After the one-minute break, Taipei’s shuttler played well and reduced
the difference by reaching at 16-17. Juliane again employed her extensive experience and occupied the driving seat by playing an attacking game. The German’s parallel strokes earned her the remaining points to win the game by a sufficient lead of 21-18. The
final score of the 42-minute match was 22-20 and 21-18.
