Juliane Schenk overpowers Eriko Hirose in Women’s Singles round-of-16 at Swiss Open GP Gold 2012
Germany’s top player Juliane Schenk powered her way into Women’s Singles quarter-final after beating Japan’s Eriko Hirose in the round-of-16 at Swiss Open GP Gold 2012 in Switzerland, on Thursday, March 15.
Schenk, who is World Number Eight and the fifth seed in the tournament, employed all of her skills to chuck out the lower ranked Hirose in a wonderful three-set fight that ended in 54 minutes.
The Japanese lady put up impressive show of top quality badminton in the opening set but failed to focus in the game in later both sets and lost the contest in hard-fought rubber games.
The opening set was stunning for the higher ranked German as Hirose found a perfect start and played tremendous badminton. She did not show any mercy to her rival and reached at 11-5 until the break.
After the interval, Schenk tried to accelerate her speed but failed to put pressure on her opponent in the entire game. She remained struggling in taking the bird early and eventually lost the set with a one-sided score of 8-21.
However, Schenk found a good rhythm in the following set and remained successful in building an impressive gap of 11-6 until the one-minute break.
After the interval, Schenk continued her flawless play and did not show any sign of slowing down the pace of rallies. She was in perfect condition as her opponent could not found a good flow.
The higher-ranked German was in complete control of rallies and bagged the set in a one-sided manner with a remarkable 21-12 score on the board.
In the deciding game, both ladies played elevated badminton in the opening half and remained equal until 8-8 when the German started to dominate the pace of rallies and reached at 11-9.
After the 60-second break, Schenk continued playing dominating and positive badminton and did not let Hirose to level the score in the whole ending phase. She ended the second game with a wonderful margin of 21-14.
Schenk emerged as the winner of this interesting rubber-set contest with an amazing 8-21, 21-12 and 21-14 score on the board.
