Juliane Schenk upsets Wang Shixian in Women’s Singles quarter-final of the Japan Open Super Series
Germany’s Juliane Schenk hammered China’s Wang Shixian in the Women’s Singles quarter-final of the 2011 Yonex Japan Open Super Series, in Tokyo, on Friday, September 23.
World Number Eight shuttler, Schenk played to her full potential and defeated World Number Two, Shixian, who was second seed in the Women’s Singles draw of the event. The German proved that she has everything to get into the top league in Women’s Singles
world standings.
Right from the start of this Women’s Singles quarter-final battle, Schenk played with passion and got support of the huge local crowd which turned out to watch both elite shuttlers fight for glory. They displayed an entertaining show of top-quality badminton
for 52 minutes. It was the German who emerged as the winner at the end of the contest.
Schenk dominated the game in the starting points by playing with precision and displayed some fabulous strokes to put pressure on the higher ranked opponent. She pushed Shixian in all corners of the court by playing with control in her strokes. Her positive
game earned her the opening game by a 21-15 margin in 24 minutes.
In the second game of this quarter-final battle, Shixian raised her level of play by executing aggressive strokes and remained close against the in-form Schenk. However, the German managed a small lead of 11-10 until the break.
After the break, Schenk played attacking badminton and scored many points by executing powerful smashes. Despite the fact that the Chinese shuttler was reducing the gap, the German remained calm and confident which helped her in maintaining focus in the
match.
As both ladies were playing positive badminton, the score progressed equally and both shuttlers reached in the ending points of the match. However, the German played confidently and won the set by a 21-19 margin, in 28 minutes. This wonderful match ended
in 51 minutes with the score of 21-15 and 21-19.
In the Women’s Singles semi-final, Schenk will play against India’s Saina Nehwal, who is the fourth seed in Japan Open.
