Julie Coin stuns Petra Rampre to secure a main draw spot – Bell Challenge 2011
French Julie Coin upset qualifying fifth seed, Slovene Petra Rampre in straight sets at the Bell Challenge 2011, a WTA International event taking place in Quebec, Canada from 10th to 18th September. She registered
a 6-3, 6-2 victory over the world number 192, Rampre to advance into the main draw on Monday.
28-year-old Frenchwoman’s experience came handy when she trashed 31-year-old Slovene in straights sets in one hour and eleven minutes on their first face-to-face.
Ranked 318th in the Sony Ericsson WTA Premier rankings, Coin earned first blood through her blistering forehands from her box of tricks. She kept her composure to pluck in entire serves and broke the Slovene’s serve
again in the last game to seal the opener with a 6-3 score line.
Coin carried her momentum into the final set and held entire serves again after displaying solid performance. She fended off all four breakpoints faced brilliantly and cashed in on half of the four breakpoint opportunities to her
advantage to clinch the set with a 6-2 win.
Overall she hammered six aces and manifested a first serve share of 61 percent as compared to her opponent’s 53 percent. The Frenchwoman spiced the match further by registering 79 percent win on it. She founded eight breakpoint
opportunities and capitalised on half of it.
The Frenchwoman will next face eighth seeded Georgian Anna Tatishvili in the first round of this event.
Qualifying fourth seed, Ashley Weinhold of America will be joining Coin in the main draw. Weinhold took almost an hour to crush her 30-year-old compatriot Abigail Spears in straight sets on another court.
She saved the only breakpoint faced in the opening set and converted two out of three breakpoint opportunities to her advantage to clinch with a 6-2 score line.
In the final set, the frustrated Spears showed some resistance and fought back well. She even got the first blood and was 3-1 up before losing her track. 22-year-old Weinhold got back on board after it. She unleashed flurry of
groundstrokes to wipe out last five games consecutively and eventually sealed the deal with a 6-3 victory.
The youngster played well throughout the match and registered a better first serve share of 57 percent as compared to Spears’ 54 percent. She also earned a marvellous 86 percent win on it.
Up next for the seeded American is the third seeded Austrian Tamira Paszek.
