Julie Coin upsets Anna Tatishvili in opening round – Bell Challenge 2011
Sheer surprise for the tennis fans at Quebec, Canada, as the eighth seed Anna Tatishvili of Georgia crashed out of the opening round of the Bell Challenge at the hands of the French qualifier, Julie Coin, on Tuesday night.
It was the 19th victory for the French veteran in the running WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) season, settling the final scores at 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, to dump the world number 91 from the $220,000 tournament.
Coin took two hours and nineteen minutes of play wrap up the three-setter in her favour, giving a big upset to the tennis fans. She is currently ranked at number 318 in the world but she played far better in the contest than her
rankings suggest. The French made most of her opportunities in the match and kept playing aggressive tennis all the way to come out as the winner in the end.
The eighth seed Georgian toiled hard to take the opening set from the French opponent but then never came on top of the game later. Coin raced through the next two sets to clinch a surprise victory over Tatishvili in the third
set and made a place in the second round of the tournament.
Both competitors served equally good in the match, with Coin bagging 41 and her opponent securing 42 first serve points in the contest. The French qualifier registered four crushing serve breaks to the opponent’s serve and kept
winning crucial points on regularity to finish the contest on the winning note.
The opener witnessed an early exchange of serve breaks from both contestants in the third and fourth game, followed by a regular game to take the scores to 6-5, with Tatishvili leading. A tie breaker was about to come into play
when the eighth seed nailed her second serve break of the day to close out the first set at 7-5.
Coin replied very strongly in the following set, breaking the Georgian in the very first game to lead 2-0. Tatishvili failed to recover from the early damage done by the serve break and dropped the second set to the French at 4-6.
Coin carried on her winning momentum in the final set and two more break point conversions proved sufficient for her to outplay the eighth seed competitor. She finished off the contest at 6-4, getting a berth in the second round of Bell Challenge to face the
unseeded Dutch contestant, Michaella Krajicek, for a place in the quarter-finals.
