Julien Benneteau runs down Tobias Kamke in round of eight – Mons Challenger 2011
Julien Benneteau, World No.73, clipped off the German world No.100, Tobias Kamke, in the quarter-final round of the Mons Challenger, on Friday, 7th October, to chair the semis. Playing at the Green Set Grand Prix blue court, the Frenchman whopped the 25-year-old to win the match 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in an hour and 51 minutes.
Starting off with serving first, Kamke opened up the first game of the match rolling down the scoreboard winning, 1-0. Levelling up the scores, Benneteau won game 2 and stood to return again, 1-1. Breaking early, the Frenchman clinched a 2-1 lead extending it to 3-1 on his service moments later.
Breaking again in game 5, Benneteau bagged another win to lead the match 4-1. Giving less chance to his German oppose, the Frenchman kept a strong defence leading to his fifth consecutive win of the set, 5-1.
Kamke did cut the lead, however, could not break back and eventually lost the set as the world No.73 rushed away with game 8 winning the first set 6-2 to lead the match 1-0.
Continuing with the second set, Kamke struck back. Winning game 1, Kamke broke the world No.73; lead the set 2-0. Serving out game 3 the world No.100 stepped on the pedal, 3-0. Bagging the first game of the set, Benneteau pulled back a game, however, could not break back and lost game 5, 1-4.
With a surprising come back, the higher ranked Frenchman served-broke-served next to cut the lead and level up the scores at 4-4. Hopping to finish off with another win Benneteau did try to break the German world No.100, however, could not secure a win and lost game 9.
Kamke came up strong and took his chance breaking the world No.73 to win the set 6-4, and levelled up the match scores at 1-1 moving on to the decider set.
The German once again took the first set serving first and led 1-0. Equalizing next, Benneteau won game 2 and switched the serve. With the two winning a game each, levelled up next at 2-2 and then on 3-3, before the world No.73 went sensational.
Breaking the lower ranked German, 4-3, Benneteau served out game 8 to lead closer to his win, 5-3. Ending up the match in style, the Frenchman broke the world No.100 with a double breakpoint win and swirled away winning the set 6-3 and into the semi-final of the ATP Challenger Tour.
Through into the second last round, the Frenchman will now play against David Goffin, world No.251, for a spot in the title match of the event.
