Julien Cagnina upsets Dominic Thiem in third round of Boys’ Singles – Wimbledon Championships 2011
Yet another upset for the tennis fans at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in Wimbledon, London, England, when the seventh seed Austrian, Dominic Thiem, crashed out of the Boys’ Singles category of the Wimbledon Championships
at the hands of Julien Cagnina of Belgium on Wednesday.
The amazing contest featured the extreme brilliance of the Belgian, who dominated every bit of the contest to dispose of one of the hot favourites for the title out of the competition. Cagnina took less than an hour to wrap up
a convincing straight sets victory over the Austrian at 6-4, 6-2, to make a place in the quarter-final of the Grand Slam tournament.
18-year-old Thiem has been in tremendous form throughout the tournament and was considered a worthy candidate for the championship title but he utterly failed to put up a decent performance in the Wednesday’s contest. The Austrian
remained futile in the entire contest to break the opponent’s serve, while suffered three out of four serve breaks from Cagnina to finish on the losing end.
Cagnina took the matchup away from the seventh seed with his magnificent serve game, delivering 60 per cent first serve on target and reeled off 24 out of 32 points on it. Thiem had a poor first serve precision of merely 42 per
cent and conceded nine alarming double faults in the game to let his opponent away with victory.
The Belgian remained very aggressive throughout the contest and launched a number of forays to the net, belting assertive cross-court winners to the opposite court. He amazingly converted 11 out of his 12 net approaches to get
the competitive advantage in the contest and committed just seven unforced errors in the whole match.
Thiem appeared bewildered right from the start of the contest dropped his serve in the second game to give a forceful beginning to Cagnina. The Belgian took the initiative and fully capitalised on the sloppy start of his opponent,
securing 15 of 18 first serve points to seal the opening set at 6-4.
After losing the first set, Thiem hung in the second for merely 25 minutes before he surrendered to the belligerent Belgian in the eighth game. Cagnina registered two successive serve breaks to push the seventh seed out of the
competition and concluded victory at 6-2 to reach the quarter-finals of Wimbledon Championships.
Cagnina will take on the Australian wildcard, Jason Kubler, on Thursday for a spot in the semis of the mega event. Kubler was victorious against Marcos Giron of the United States in the third round draws.
