  1. Duran would outbox Chavez in 12 or 15 rounds. Duran at 135 was at his peak. Duran slipped punches and rolled well against punches. Chavez relied on constant pressure and wore opponents down with a sturdy chin. Lets remember Duran was only KO'd twice and that was above 135 by Herans and Joppy. Duran UD in a hard fight with both fighters throwing bombs..

  2. i say chavez i like that guy he was really good one of my all time favs i like duran too chavez could prob beat him though

    thanks

  3. Ah, two great warriors!! Man that would be some fight! I would say Roberto Duran wins by decision 3 maybe 4 out of five times. But Julio Chavez would not get out pointed by much, possibly some split decisions. How about a 15 round fight with them two?

Crowd chants Chavez, chavez, then Duran, duran duran durannnnn

  4. Duran by brutal k.o., he was the greatest lightweight of all time.

  5. duran was much stronger at than chavez, this would be a tough one for both, however duran would have the busier work rate of the two and would take a close decision.

if these guys met 5 times, then chavez would win at least one of them .......a-la esteban de jesus.

  6. Duran was d**n-near unstoppable at lightweight. . . .period.

Chavez was great, but what top-tier fighter did he REALLY beat?  Don't say Whitaker, don't say Taylor.  See what I mean?

  7. Duran

  8. In my honest opinion at 135 lbs nobody was better than Duran.  He was clever, fast, strong, had good power, intimidating, mean, fierce, and tough as nails too.  Chavez is also a great fighter and would not be an easy match for anyone including Hands of Stone Duran.  He also is a hard puncher but I believe he was a little easier to hit than Duran who was really good at slipping punches and countering.  Chavez also has an iron chin so he would be able to go the distance in my opinion.  Duran would for the most part outsmart and outbox the great Chavez in a hard fought contest and win by unanimous decision.

  9. No one likes to believe Duran can be hurt at 135.  I dont know many who could do it.  Perhaps Chavez comes close.  Off the top of my head I would pick Duran too but I dont think it would be as easy as many think.

Duran could certainly dish out a lot of punishment.  But if anyone was actually TOUGHER than Duran,  if thats even possible,  its Chavez.  The the Chavez in 1989 who melted down Edwin Rosario after taking his best punches.  Rosario was CLEARLY the hardest punching lightweight in the world at that time.   Who could forget the smile on Chavez' face as he pinned Rosario in the corner and destroyed his body.  Both eyes were already closed and Edwin had been reduced to a wreck of a man.

Overall its easy to pick Duran as the greatest lightweight.   I remember arguing with many old timers that he would beat Benny Leonard,  a man many had picked as the greatest at 135.  I dont hear those guys much anymore so the pick for Duran is as much a generational point of view as it is a factual one.

Duran was the harder puncher between the two.  That much is clear.  He FLATTENED guys at 135.  Chavez clearly takes a better punch.   How many times did Rosario land on his chin?  How many times did Chavez even blink?  Forget the Meldric Taylor fight.  Im sick of listening to everyone cry about that 2 seconds.  Taylor was RUINED after that fight.

Duran was a much better defensive fighter than given credit for and certain better, defensively, than Chavez.   He also had a slight edge in hand speed.  He didnt always show it because he didnt need to.

Duran would build an early lead because he would cause Chavez to miss a lot of punches.  There would be no knock downs.  Both men are very tough.  True, Esteban DeJesus knocked Duran down in both fights at 135.  Duran had the flu the first time and just got caught off balance the second time because he allowed his hatred for DeJesus to get the better of him.   Not the same problem here.  Chavez would force Duran to work but Druan can fight very well from an offensive or defensive position.  He truely was the greatest in many ways.

Chavez would catch up in the middle rounds when Duran realizes he cant KO Julio.  Duran would  have to dig into the well for this one.  Chavez keeps coming and coming,  never giving an inch and never giving up.  Duran would be forced to rely on his superior defense and make Chavez miss the majority of his punches , while landing his own.

The pick here is an easy one.  The fight itself is NOT easy for the victor.

    Duran by unanimous decision

  10. Roberto Duran Hands Down

  11. Wow 2 of my faves, I like the pre "no mas" Duran to edge out Chavez on points, I say that today but I could change my mind tomorrow, its tough, Very Good Question!

  12. At lightweight I don't believe Duran had a equal. He was strong and hard to hit. He had a nasty disposition. Don't be fooled by his later middleweight days. Duran at lightweight was a animal!

Chavez was great, but I think he was a step below Duran.

It would have been a fun fight to watch!
