Julio Cesar Campozano stuns Daniel Munoz-de la Nava in 1st round - Ciudad de Guayaquil CH 2011
The biggest upset of the day occurred when Ecuadorian wildcard entrant Julio Cesar Campozano defeated eighth seeded Spanish Daniel Munoz-de la Nava in the first round of the Ciudad de Guayaquil Challenger 2011.
On Monday the 21st of November 2011, at the classic clay outdoor courts of the Guayaquil Tennis Club in Guayaquil, Ecuador, the players had encountered against each other. It took Ecuadorian wildcard entrant one hour and thirty eight minutes to beat the eighth seeded Spaniard in straight sets of 6-4, 7-6(1).
Commencing the opening round of the math was Nava and both the players had managed to bag their respective serves to place themselves on the scoreboard at 1-1. The two challengers then bagged a game each on alternate serves in the following two games and the score had tied at two games each in the fourth game.
Both the players kept matching an eye for an eye the score progressed on even terms. As the cat and mouse chase advanced into the set, last time the score tied was at four games each at the end of the eighth game. However, it was in the ninth game that Nava double faulted on his second serve and gave away a pivotal game.
On the contrary, Campozano capitalized on the breakpoint and then held his serve for the last time to bag the initial round with a 6-4 victory. He had now taken the competitive edge in the match and required one more set in order to progress into the next round.
Once again Nava initiated the second round and the players each bagged their service games in the first two games. Nava bagged a game with a hold of serve in the third game and then capitalized on a double fault to take a mini lead at the end of the fourth game.
However, Campozano made a return by breaking back to reduce the deficit to 2-3 in the fifth game and with a hold of serve in the sixth he completely mitigated the deficit to tie the score at three games each.
Subsequently, the players bagged a service game each for the following four games and the last time the score tied at five games each by the end of the tenth game. The set was ultimately shoved into a tiebreaker as the players traded in breaks to tie the score at six games each at the end of the twelfth game.
Campozano was first to take the lead in the tiebreaker and with a series of breaks and holds he accomplished to reach the finish line to clinch the tiebreaker at 7-1. In doing so; he managed to reserve a spot in the second round where he will be facing Argentinean Andres Molteni.
