Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.: I was 20 seconds away from knocking him out – Boxing News
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. suffered his career’s very first loss at the hands of Argentinean fighter Sergio Martinez. Chavez failed to dominate Martinez during most of the round. Although he overpowered Martinez in the last round of the fight, it was too late
for him to score a victory.
“I was 20 seconds away from knocking him out,” said Chavez at the post-fight press conference. “I just started way too late. He was standing right in front of me and I was the one who made the mistake by not throwing punches. I thought I could do the whole
fight what I did the last round.”
Chavez, who was always regarded as a paper champion, wanted to prove his mettle by defeating crowd favourite Sergio Martinez. However, Chavez’s dream was shattered when Martinez tactfully grabbed the fight from him. However, Chavez did prove that he is not
as weak as others think he is. By beating Martinez in the last round, Chavez proved that he indeed is a strong puncher.
“For 11 rounds I worked very hard but in the last round he hurt me,” admitted Martinez at the post fight conference. “I continued fighting like the warrior that I am.”
“I'm going to rest and take a vacation but I'll fight anybody they put in front of me. If Julio wants a rematch and the public wants a rematch, we can do a rematch,” he added.
Similarly, even Martinez promoter Lou DiBella admitted the fact that the fight was way more enthralling than expected. According to DiBella, it was an epic bout which had Martinez giving Chavez a boxing lesson for 11 rounds while the last round was an epic
one.
DiBella expressed his amusement over how Martinez survived the last round. Maybe it was Chavez’ bad luck and his plan for the fight was weak. If he had understood Martinez tactics right from the start, things would have been different.
For now, Chavez got the first loss of his career and he now stands with 46 wins and 1 loss, whereas Martinez improved to 50 wins and 2 losses.
