Julio Cesar Chavez Jr stuns Andy Lee in seventh round to defend WBC middleweight title – Boxing News
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, the current WBC middleweight champion, successfully defended his streak and the title for the third consecutive time against Irish proud Andy Lee, by knocking him out in the seventh round of the 12-round bout held on June 16, 2012.
The bout, which was to some extent dubbed as a one-sided session and started in a very sluggish manner, headlined the pay-per-view organised and promoted by Bob Arum of Top Rank.
The ring for the showdown was set up at Sun Bowl arena in El Paso, Texas, United States and also witnessed Miguel Vazquez collide with Daniel Attah while constituting the co-main event.
The show was televised live on HBO in its weekly Saturday night boxing show and put forth the American boxing fans an impressive and worth watching performance. Julio, 26, was entering the ring with dual responsibilities on his shoulders – one of defending
the title and the other of defending the win streak.
The young Mexican lad boasted an undefeated streak in a total 47 bouts. Cesar has nailed 31 of his opponents by knockout and was the fan-favourite in all facets of the sport even before the bout.
Julio’s Saturday night opponent, Andy, 28, was entering in his career’s 30th bout and boasted 28 wins with just one loss to Brian Vera. Lee is also considered as a decent knockout pounder who has stunned 20 opponents by his powerful left hook.
Before the bout, it was hypothecated that if Lee capitalises his southpaw stance emphatically, a classic win for the Irish pounder is inevitable. The reason for it was simple as Julio has never collided with a southpaw and Lee was his first ever southpaw
opponent.
Despite the fact that Julio was facing this one significant disadvantage, the Mexican lad did not show any kind of intimidation and connected his jabs well stunning Andy every now and then.
During the initial rounds, the pace of the bout was slow but later on, with the passage of time, things started to get bitter at least for Lee as Julio did not give any kind of leverage to the incumbent NABA middleweight champion to throw any kind of damage
inflicting jabs.
It was the seventh round when Julio found a clean opening and connected an upper cut which was followed by a wave of punches eventually provoking the bout-referee to intervene and halt the bout.
After collecting an impressive win in just two minutes and 21 seconds of the seventh round, Julio stated, “I began by studying him. I saw he had nothing, and I dove in. He's strong, he's young, he's big, he gave me everything he had, but he couldn't do anything
to me.”
The unfortunate challenger Lee, while putting forth his thoughts commented, “I couldn't hold him off. He was too big and too strong.” Chavez will now move on to collide with the divisional champion Sergio Gabriel Martinez.
This was Julio’s 48th career and 32nd knockout win whereas Lee has received his second career loss and first in almost four years.
