Julio Cesar Chavez Jr to defend WBC middleweight title against Irish pounder Andy Lee – Boxing News
Julio Cesar Chavez Junior, the current WBC middleweight champion, will defend his title for the third consecutive time against Irish proud Andy Lee, the current NABA middleweight champion, in a 12-round bout which will be held on June 16, 2012.
The above duo will headline the pay-per-view organised and promoted by Bob Arum of Top Rank and the ring for the showdown will be setup at Sun Bowl arena situated in El Paso, Texas, United States.
The event will be televised live on HBO’s weekly boxing show and will also witness Vanes Martirosyan take on Ryan Davis in a non-title 10-round bout while constituting the co-main event.
Both men are dubbed as top-notch pugilists in the middleweight division in fact Julio resides at World Boxing Organisation’s third rank whereas Lee secures the sixth position.
It is this reason why the clash will be a classic one. Moreover, Chavez Junior is entering the ring with a huge undefeated streak. Julio, 26, has entered the ring a total 47 times and has nailed 31 of his opponents by knockout.
The young Mexican proud has received just one draw decision in his whole career against Troy Rowland and since then is on a five-bout win streak. In addition, immediately after the draw decision, Julio collided with John Duddy and grabbed the vacant WBC
silver middleweight gold.
Later on, Cesar vacated the title in order to move forward and take on the WBC middleweight champion Sebastian Zbik. The bout was a success and Julio engraved his name on the apex divisional title by collecting a majority decision.
Since then Julio has defended his title successfully against Peter Manfredo Jr and Marco Antonio Rubio. His opponent, Lee, 28, is a young surging Irish brawler who has been in a total 29 bouts.
The southpaw pugilist has collected 20 of his total 28 wins by knocking the opponent out cold and therefore possesses a pretty decent powerful left hook. During a recent media interaction, Julio Junior shared his thoughts about Lee and stated, “On paper
it looks like Andy Lee my strongest opponent. He’s left-handed, tall and very hungry to be champion and that makes him a very dangerous opponent for me…I know people pay good money to see me fight and I want my fans go home happy. For me it’s important to
win, but I also want to the fans enjoy my matches.”
Julio must reconsider the enjoyment part of his game plan as Andy does have bit technical advantages over him. Lee is not only taller but is also a southpaw. The taller height will aid Andy in throwing jabs from a considerable distance while keeping his
own self safe whereas the southpaw stance will definitely create problems for the Mexican proud.
