Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. wants to punish Sergio Martinez in the ring – Boxing News
Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. ‘Son of the Legend’ has faced more criticism than any other fighter in the history of boxing. He is an undefeated champion, with a record of 46 wins, 1 tie and 0 losses, yet he is not respected by fans and within the boxing fraternity.
To break the chain, Chavez accepted the challenge to face Sergio Martinez, who is considered among one of the most explosive middleweights of all time. Although it is a tough fight for Chavez, the WBC middleweight champion believes he can pass the test to
finally gain the respect he deserves.
“I will always be criticized for being perceived as riding my father's coattails and I have learned to live with it,” said Chavez in an interview with ESPN. “I am proud of my father's accomplishments. Not only is he a Hall of Fame member, but he is also
universally acknowledged as the best fighter to ever come out of Mexico -- a country that has produced an incredible amount of world champions. I am proud to be his son and I am proud to have his name.”
While Chavez has hardly said a word regarding Martinez, the latter has taken his shots at the champion. Chavez feels disrespected by Martinez’s verbal assaults, believing that the Argentinean fighter is underestimating him.
Chavez asserted that he has great respect for Martinez as a fighter but not as a person. According to Chavez, Martinez has said a lot of things about him which are not true, and that the only way to prove himself right is to beat Martinez in the ring.
Chavez promised fans that Martinez will pay for his impudence on September 15 at the Thomas & Mack Centre. According to Chavez, Martinez is an ignorant person and a snob.
When asked if Martinez’s verbal assaults are a distraction for him, Chavez said it is not, instead Martinez is digging his own grave by throwing harsh words at him.
As of now, Chavez is ready to take on the Argentinean proud, believing this is his chance to cement his legacy as one of the best undefeated champions of all time.
