Julio Cesar Chavez suffers first career defeat at the hands of Sergio Martinez – Boxing News
Previously unbeaten WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez finally suffered the first defeat of his career at the hands of former champion Sergio Martinez. Both men faced each other past Saturday night at the Thomas & Mack Center.
Martinez entered the ring with 49 wins, 2 losses, 2 ties and 28 knockouts, whereas Julio Cesar Chavez had 46 wins, 1 tie and 0 losses in portfolio. Unfortunately, with this loss, Chavez is now at 1 loss, whereas Martinez has improved to 50 wins.
The fight started off with Martinez controlling Chavez. Although Chavez made a strong comeback in the eleventh and damaged Martinez way too much, he still could not knock the Argentinean out. At the post fight press conference, Chavez admitted that he attacked
Martinez too late for his own good.
“I was 20 seconds away from knocking him out,” said Chavez. “I just started way too late. He was standing right in front of me and I was the one who made the mistake by not throwing punches. I thought I could do the whole fight what I did the last round.”
On the other hand, Martinez’s promoter Lou DiBella claimed that the fight was an epic battle for survival. “You saw a boxing clinic for 11 rounds and you saw an epic last round. I don't know how he held on. That was f*cking epic. That what boxing is all
about,” said DiBella.
Lastly, even Martinez admitted that the last round was damaging for him, as Chavez unleashed his fury and his chain of punches that he hardly could bear.
“For 11 rounds I worked very hard but in the last round he hurt me. I continued fighting like the warrior that I am,” said Martinez.
Whether Chavez won or not, he proved his mettle in the ring against Martinez. In the last round, Chavez proved that he indeed is a world-class fighter and not a paper-champion. However, unfortunately he could not hold onto his WBC title. The final scores
of the fight were 117-110, 118-109, 118-109, setting Martinez as the winner.
