Julio Lugo sparks as Atlanta Braves defeat Pittsburgh Pirates 4-3 - MLB Update
Atlanta Braves’ short-stop, Julio Lugo had a remarkable day with the bat as he went 3-for-8 with an average of .188 and scored one run including a walk in the Braves’ 4-3 win against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Turner Field, Atlanta on July 26.
The Pirates led off 2-0 at the top of the first inning. Neil Walker tripled to deep right-field and Xavier Paul scored a single run. Walker posted the second run on the score-board when Pedro Alvarez drove a single-run shot towards right-field.
In the second inning, the Pirates took a 3-0 lead when Michael McKenry hit a solo homer (416 feet) to left-field. On the other hand, the Braves’ batters exploded three runs during the third inning to tie the game 3-3. Dan Uggla singled towards centre-field,
Brian McCann posted a single run and Freddie Freeman occupied second base.
The second and third run for the Braves was taken by Freeman and Uggla when Jason Heyward drove a single-run shot towards centre-field. Eric Hinske set himself on to second base at the end of third inning. During the fourth inning, Lyle Overbay flied out
to right-field and McKenry also flied out to centre-field without adding a leading run.
The pitchers restricted the batters to such an extent that the game remained level until the 18th inning. There were some scoring opportunities in the middle innings of the game but the batters could not benefit from them.
Lugo said, “I didn't feel the tag. He made the right call. I got in there. It was awesome. It was fun. It was like backyard baseball, no rules.”
In the 12th inning, David Ross walked but Uggla lined out to third base and Freeman got out to third base also, without any run. The Braves’ starter, Tommy Hanson was little bit shaky as he surrendered three runs on seven hits with two walks and
threw his six innings with an ERA of 3.13. He gave up three earned runs and had six strike-outs on his 103 pitches.
In the 19th inning of the game, Scott Proctor hit a grounder towards third base and Lugo posted one run to take a 4-3 lead. The four-game series was tied 1-1 with the hard fought victory of the Braves at Turner Field.
