Julio Silva brings down Wayne Odesnik in quarter-final round – Buenos Aires Challenger 2011
Julio Silva, Brazilian world No.159, outlasted his quarter-final round challenger of Buenos Aires Challenger 2011, Wayne Odesnik, American world No.132, beating him down in straight sets, 7-6(5), 6-4, in exactly two hours clay
match on Friday, 11th of November 2011.
Although Odesnik had the ranking advantage, he still could not out the veteran challenger. Nevertheless, making their way on the red surface, the two warmed up followed by the service toss.
Starting off with the match opener, Silva served first, however, Odesnik made an early impact breaking the Brazilian to bag the opening game of the first set, 1-0. Serving out his opening serve the American stepped up the lead
to win his second consecutive game, 2-0.
Finally, Silva pulled off a winner to cut the lead to 1-2. Following up the veteran Brazilian broke the higher ranked rival to finish the lead winning game four, 2-2. Increasing his lead to 3-2, the 32-year-old pulled off another
winner to lead the set, however, Odesnik covered the lead bagging the next game, game six, 3-3.
The two held their serves and levelled up again at 4-4 and then on 5-5 and eventually led on to a tiebreaker. Silva, serving first for the tiebreaker, won four out of the first six points, leading the tiebreaker 4-2. Odesnik did
pull back and level the points, 5-5, yet could not stop the veteran from bagging the last two points.
Finishing off the first set 7-6(5), Silva once again bombarded the American breaking him in the first game of the second set to lead, 1-0. Saving a breakpoint on his set opening serve, Silva extended his lead to 2 consecutive game
wins, 2-0.
Unable to counter the veteran, Odesnik once again fell short of making his mark and lost his second serve to lag behind, 0-3. American world No.132 did break back right away to cut the lead to 1-3, however, Silva replied with another
breakpoint winner, game five, and led the set 4-1.
Striking again, Odesnik broke once again, game six, 4-2, and served out game seven to close up the lead to 3-4. Anyhow, that was the last break he could get. With two more wins required to conclude the fixture, Silva pocketed two
out of the last three games, closing the second set at 6-4 to win the fixture in straight sets.
Making his way into the semi-final round of the ATP Challenger Tour event, Brazilian now moves onto the play Portuguese 20-year-old, Gastao Elias, to battle out for a seat in the final round of Beunos Aires Challenger 2011.
