June 14, All Blacks vs Sprinboks, did anyone notice...?

Instead of the referee calling Richie McCaw 'Black 7' to come over to him, he shouted 'Richie Richie' for him to come over, anyone notice that isn't protocol, and even more visibly, Richie McCaw looked confused that he was being addressed by his first name rather than his team and position or by his title of Captain. Just saying...bit strange eh??

  1. Like the previous people stated, during active play, players are referred to by their color and number (aka Black7 for Richie)  However, during stoppages it's fine for a ref to use a proper name for a player.  What's more important is that Richie, or anyone else for that matter maintained decorum when replying to the ref  (saying thank you and sir and the like)

  2. Differtent refs have different ways of handling the game. Allthough calling players by name looks odd it really doesn't matter as long as he's in control of the game that's pretty much it.

  3. hey

I never saw the game but it must of been quiet a good game. as for the name calling, when the ref stops the game they may call him by his name but it not that very often. usually it is by there number on there back. I Play Union and the refs never call us by name. I find it Inappropriate and disrespectful.  well done to the Kiwis. Yet another thrashing to south Africa. Guess its gonna be Australia VS New Zealand in the finals for the second year in a row but this time the Aussies are gonna take home the bledisloe cup as well as the tri-nations Trophy.

Aussie Aussie Aussie oi oi oi

  4. No, didn`t notice that , but  Wow, didn`t Ritchie play another blinder . What an awesome player and Captain he is .....by far ,the best openside flanker in the world....never, ever hear him bleating and whineing when his team get beaten , mind you ,that isn`t very often I guess.

We seem to hear a lot of wingeing, and referee bashing from South Africa....I guess that is cos they get beaten more often.

h**l, even the Aussie`s don`t bleat like that.!

  5. whats the big deal (no offence) everybody knows who Richie McCaw is...i wouldn't mind the ref calling me by my name instead of my number. But it was a bloody fantastic game. Kudos to SA for putting up a good first half....

    GO ALL BLACKS!!!!

  6. Nothing wrong with that. The protocol is to use player numbers during play. When addressing the captains during a break in play, refs often use their names. Everything has to do with effective communication, and each referee uses his own style. As for McCaw looking confused - not sure it was for the use of his name or for the passage of play preceding it.

  7. this refs an idiot

  8. yeah i noticed that too!! haha!! pretty unprofessional eh??

  9. Happens in league alot, I didn't notice but yes it would be a bit strange. I've heard the ref call George Gregan 'George' before.

Also a few years ago when Jonah Lomu was playing, he came on to te field as a replacement (number 22), yet the referee kept on calling him 'number 11'

I guess it has to do with a players status and rep to a certain extent and how they refer to the players off the field. I presume these calliung of names and wrong numbers are more instinctive than anything
