Jungle Wave back to try his luck yet again in the Play the King Stakes at Woodbine
Tucci Stables owned 6-year-old gelding, Jungle Wave, had a successful run in the $200,000 Play the King Stakes, two years back, in 2009 at Woodbine, and last year the son of Hold that Tiger finished second to Smokey Fire in the seven furlong dash.
This year Jungle Wave seeks redemption to re-claim the Play the King Stakes' title on 28 August, 2011.
Trained by Sid Attard, Jungle Wave hasn’t won a single race since 2009, and Play the King Stakes was his last score.
Play the King Stakes have reeled in 12 sprinters and the race is for 3-year-olds and above horses.
Jungle Wave should be significantly familiar with the Woodbine track since he made his last 19 starts there, and in four of his five starts there, he hasn’t finished worse than third, except he wasn’t able to land any race.
In his last start under jockey L Contreras on the grass of Woodbine, Jungle Wave led by 2 lengths by the time he went past the eighth pole, but the 6-year-old was the first one to wilt and finished second on 6 August, 2011, beaten by a mere nose.
This time around in the Woodbine feature race, Jungle Wave will be ridden by Jesse Campbell for the first time, and the pair will be facing a trio of recent stakes winners including Great Mills, Stormy Lord and Havelock.
The son of War Front, Great Mills, and his fellow runner Havelock will be running at the Woodbine racecourse for the first time ever.
Great Mills have gone on to win at Saratoga by a nose in the Quick Call Stakes on 28 July, 2011. He has been successful on grass earlier this year, when he participated in the Grindstone Stakes at Fair Grounds.
Havelock has Arlington Sprint Handicap on his resume, where he narrowly won the race by a neck. Earlier this year he prevailed in the Grade 3 Hanshin Cup Handicap at Keeneland.
With runners coming off wins and under good momentum, Jungle Wave could find it difficult to re-claim his prize, but Jungle Wave knows the track better than anybody participating in the Play the King Stakes.
