Eighteen-member Junior Black Sticks Women’s hockey team has been announced to participate in the Lal Bahadur Shastri U-21 Four-Nation tournament scheduled to be held in India from November 8 to 12. The event will be the first and the last international tournament
for the Junior Black Sticks Women in the running year as after the event the team will not feature in any international event.
The junior team has been selected after a thorough performance analysis at the training camp conducted this week in Papatoetoe where the Head Coach choose the 18 best players from a pool of 30 players which was formed after the U-21 National tournament in
May. The training camp was also a part of the Hockey New Zealand’s new Owen G Glenn Future Black Sticks Programme.
“Key factors that formed the basis of selection, were identifying players that have core skills, are physically capable, are coachable and can follow instructions, as well as having the ability to play at intensity and who can counter attack quickly,” Chris
Leslie, the Head Coach of the Junior Black Sticks Women hockey team, stated about their criteria for the selection of the team.
The team also consists of some of the current Black Sticks players including Amelia Gibson, Samantha Charlton, Julia King and Rhiannon Dennison along with three of the up and coming players, mid-fielder Shareena Nana and the strikers Tara Hall and Natasha Cotton.
The squad contains a good mix of both experienced and young players.
