Junior Dos Santos: UFC should expand Performance Enhancing Drug testing procedures - UFC News
Junior Dos Santos, the current UFC heavyweight champion, broke his silence on UFC’s hottest issue, Performance Enhancing drugs (PED), advising that there should not be just one procedure to determine the presence of illegal drugs in a fighter's body. He
added that that UFC should expand its horizon and include blood testing as well.
Santos, 27, is scheduled to defend his title against Frank Mir and will headline UFC 146 pay-per-view. The duo will meet at the octagon set up at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, United States.
The event will be co-headlined by the non-title heavyweight bout between Cain Velasquez and Antonio Silva. Santos, being the owner of the promotion’s apex divisional title, literally fulfilled his responsibility by bashing individuals who take PED’s just
to perform well during the bout.
Santos was of the view that stringent measures should be taken in order to enforce the testing methodologies and not even a single individual should be given leisure of any kind in this respect.
Also known as the ‘Cigano’, Dos commented that use of illegal drugs makes an individual not only strong and stiff but makes him immune as well. Junior added that this facet makes the user of the PED close to invincible as he does not feel any pain and has
no affect of opponent’s strikes on his body.
While advising UFC to expand its vision and revamp its testing procedure, Santos stated, “As far as testing goes, it should be enforced. It should be expanded. I think there should be more tests - blood tests, not just urine. The urine doesn't test everything.”
The Brazilian Jiu-jitsu brown belt holder Santos further added, “I don’t think it’s fair to the hard-working, dedicated professional fighters to be put against fighters who use these substances. I think a lot of PEDs don’t just make a guy stronger, but they
practically make him immune to receiving blows and punches. The guy can take a lot more of a beating without it really affecting him. It’s grossly unfair.”
Junior Dos Santos has been in a total 15 mixed martial art bouts and boasts 14 wins. The Brazilian pounder has nailed 10 opponents by knockout, two by submission and two by decision. In addition, Santos is also considered as one of those belligerents who
have kept themselves away from any kind of controversy, the reason why he bashed the PED users in his recent interview.
When asked as to what he thinks about the whole Overeem extravaganza, Santos simply said that the matter is in between Alistair and NSAC and as far as he is concerned, he just has one view point.
If Overeem is guilty the nine-month suspension is due and on merit. Santos further on added that he will take on Alistair with title on the line if UFC arranges a bout.
