Junior Dos Santos all set to defend UFC heavyweight title against Frank Mir on UFC 146 - UFC News
Junior Dos Santos, the current Ultimate Fighting championship heavyweight champion, will defend his title for the first time in his career against one of the best submission specialists in UFC, Frank Mir, in a five-round bout which will be held on Saturday
May 26, 2012.
The duo will headline the highly anticipated heavyweight fight card UFC 146, the first ever in the history of UFC where all the fights pertain to the heavyweight division. The octagon for the event will be set up at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada,
United States.
The night will be co-headlined by the epic non-title clash between Cain Velasquez and Antonio Silva. The duo recently met at the pre-bout press conference and shared their thoughts about each other.
It must be kept in mind that the odds are strictly 50-50 on both sides as both pugilist’s are unique and possess their respective lethal weapons. Frank, a former UFC heavyweight champion, is a submission specialist and his grip on the sport of making an
opponent submit can be understood from the fact that he recently broke the arm of Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, trainer Dos Santos.
On the other hand, we have the champion Junior Dos Santos who is well known as a knockout specialist and is coming from a win over Cain Velasquez, the bout in which he grabbed his UFC heavyweight gold.
Frank is a bit more experienced than Santos and has been in a total 21 bouts. Mir has grabbed nine of his total 16 bouts by making the opponent submit, three by knockout and another three by decision.
Santos, 27, has been in a total 15 bouts and has collected 10 of his wins by knockout, two by submission and another two by decision. Both are expert in altogether different brawling stance which makes the bout more interesting.
During the press conference, Mir stated, “He’s very impressive, and he’s probably a better boxer than me, but so what? I know I’m better on the ground, and I’ve got to figure out a way to prove it, and I’m going to.”
At the same time, Santos who by some critics is also thinking of avenging his mentor’s broken arm, calmly commented, “I know he’s a guy who has been around a long time and knows how to do everything. I’m going to see if he can handle what I can do, and I’m
going to try to knock him out in the first two rounds.”
Both men will give a tough time to each other and the clash is definitely worth watching as it is between two of the best men who boast complete mastery of their brawling style.
