Junior Dos Santos scheduled to fight Alistair Overeem with heavyweight gold on the line – UFC news
According to co-owner UFC Lorenzo Fertitta's recent tweet, Junior Dos Santos, the current UFC heavyweight champion, will take on the current number one contender Alistair Overeem most probably on May 26, 2012.
Lorenzo made the announcement through his Twitter while replying to his fans. According to the details, the bout is scheduled to take place at MGM Garden Grand Arena and will have Dos’ heavyweight title on the line. The remaining fight card is still to be
announced but one thing’s for sure that the clash between these two heavyweights will headline UFC’s 146th pay-per-view.
The official announcement is still to be made by the organisation itself. In addition, it has been revealed that there is one minute obstacle that might hamper the occurrence of this bout. Alistair, the brawler who knocked out former UFC champion Brock Lesnar,
is being alleged of misdemeanour battery charges.
The problem arose when Overeem pushed a woman at Wynn Las Vegas. As a result of Alistair was called on for investigations and was awarded a six month detention and a fine not exceeding $1000. At the moment Alistair, infamous as the Demolition man is scheduled
to attend a court hearing on February 21, 2012. If things get complicated the event might get jeopardised.
But UFC President Dana White does not think so. When asked to comment about Overeem’s apprehension and detention Dana replied, "I don't think he's in that much trouble. This isn't a situation where he beat somebody up; I don't think that's the case."
Santos, nicknamed as the Cigano, is recovering from a torn meniscus injury of the knee, an injury that he received in his championship bout against Cain Velasquez. The Brazilian Dos has entered in the octagon a total 15 times and collected a total 14 wins.
Santos has collected 10 of his wins by knockout.
On the other hand we have the Dutch Alistair who has been in a total 48 mixed martial art bouts and nailed 36 of his opponents vehemently. He has collected 15 wins by kayo, 19 by making the opponent submit and two by collecting unanimous decision. The bout
is still to be finalised but if it happens it will be an epic clash to witness.
