Junior Faria and Patrick Gudauskas triumph in Round 3 of Quiksilver Pro Portugal 2011
Quiksilver Pro Portugal’s round of 24 (Round 3) continued with the third and fourth heat at the beach-break of Ribeira D’Ilhas in Ericeira, Portugal, on Thursday, June 16.
Brazil’s Junior Faria advanced to the next round of the competition by clinching a convincing win over Australia’s Heath Joske in the third heat, removing his rival from the event title contention.
The fourth heat saw America’s Patrick Gudauskas continue his winning momentum, this time making South Africa’s Travis Logie a victim to get one step closer to the title.
The Brazilian surfers have been making a strong impact in surfing over the last few months and Faria happens to be one of the most prominent of these surfers. He lived up to his reputation by giving an impressive performance during the third heat of Round
3.
As the battle between him and Joske commenced, he got down to business right away and locked a wave that came his way to score 5.93 points off it, grabbing an early lead. A little later, he caught another good wave to throw down a string of impressive turns
and flips, earning 7.50 points for the effort to move to a heat-total of 13.43 points.
Joske was unable to rise up to the challenge and ended up surrendering victory after scoring a 3.50 and 5.00 of his two best waves to finish with a two-wave total of 8.50 points.
The next heat saw Gudauskas take on Logie in a battle for survival and slot in the next round. Although both surfers had looked quite impressive in the previous heats, the American was undoubtedly more in form as compared to the South African. This difference
was made even more evident as the two took each other on in the 30-minute heat.
Gudauskas wasted no time in asserting his dominance, locking a wave to execute a combination of impressive tricks to earn 7.43 points. Logie responded ineffectively with a 4.83-point wave in an effort to narrow the gap.
The South African soon added a 5.33 to his score to reach a two-wave total of 10.16 points and gain a rather volatile lead. As expected, Gudauskas easily regained the top position by earning 5.50 points from his second wave and moving to a two-wave total
of 12.93 points. As a result, he got to walk away with the top honours, while the South African was removed from the race for the event title.
