Junior Faria and Patrick Gudauskas triumphant in Round 2 of Quiksilver Pro Portugal 2011
The latest edition of Quiksilver Pro Portugal continued to deliver top-class surfing action at Ribeira D’Ilhas beach in Ericeira, Portugal, on Wednesday, June 15th, with the third and fourth heat of round of 48 (Round 2).
Heat 3 saw Brazil’s Junior Faria prevail over the competition to reserve a place for him in the next round, while South Africa’s Travis Logie managed to extend his life in the competition as well by finishing second. The bottom-two positions were rounded
out by the two Brazilians, Thiago Camarao and Jadson Andre, putting them out of the title contention.
America’s Patrick Gudauskas clinched the top honours in a low-scoring fourth heat to qualify for round three. Australia’s Heath Joske also advanced further in the event by securing the runner-up finish. America’s Nat Young was forced out of the competition
after faltering during the contest, along with Hawaii’s Fredrick Patacchia.
The Brazilians have been making quite a strong impact in surfing over the last few months and Faria simply lived up to the reputation, though not that convincingly. As the heat kicked off, he got down to work right away, locking the first wave for a score
of 6.33. His next wave came in the final moments, taking his heat-total to 12.43 points. The score proved sufficient to carry him to victory and qualify him to the next round.
Logie managed to survive the heat as well by finishing in second place after scoring 6.17 and 5.30 points from his two best waves during the 30-minute heat. However, he did seem a bit out of rhythm, struggling to catch waves during the four-way battle.
Camarao barely missed out on a place in the next round by 0.24 points and ended up finishing third. Andre finished last with 11.06 points, surprising everyone with a relatively weak performance as he was being considered among the strongest contenders for
the event title.
Gudauskas clinched victory in the next heat, though just barely. He opened his account with a 4.57-point wave and later added an impressive 7.00 to finish with 11.57 points.
Joske put up a commendable fight, but eventually had to settle for second position after scoring a disappointing 3.90 early in the heat and later adding an impressive 7.50 to his overall score. The effort did however, earn him a place in the next round.
The young sensation from California, Young had gotten off to an amazing start on the first day of the competition. However, he seemed to have lost his excellent form overnight. His performance in the second round was nothing to write home about, scoring
10.67 points only from his two waves, to find himself ejected from the title race. Patacchia finished in fourth place with a heat-total of 10.00, consequently getting eliminated from the event as well.
