Junior dos Santos deafets Cain Velasquez within two minutes to win maiden UFC title – MMA News
Cain Ramirez Velasquez, an American mixed martial arts fighter lost his championship title to Junior dos Santos. The 27-year old Brazilian, Santos, won the UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championship) heavyweight title when UFC made its debut on FOX on November 12, 2011.
Velasquez had become the heavyweight champion nearly a year ago but he has not been able defend his championship since then, due to a shoulder injury. In the Saturday’s match, Junior Dos Santos fought with spirit against the champion as the Brazilian blasted off against the American the moment their match started. The American fighter, who was recovering from his shoulder injury, was capable of retaining his title but Santos did not give any room to Velasquez in saving his title or the body shots that the Brazilian gave him.
Velasquez, who became the champion on October 23, 2010 by defeating Brock Lesnar in four minutes and twelve seconds, looked unanswerable against Santos.
Santos, who began his UFC career in October 2008, took only one-minute and four seconds to put down Velasquez. The moment the match began, Santos used his right and left punches to start an aggressive offensive attack against the champion. Velasquez may have underestimated the power and energy that Santos was showing in the first few seconds of the match.
Velasquez did not have any time to throw punches of his own but he was forced to block the shots with which Santos was attacking him with. The initial attack by Santos was so swift and merciless, that Velasquez was taken off guard.
He was clearly in shock to see someone with the like of Santos begin the match with such intensity. The moment Velasquez tried to start his counter attack was the time when his downfall began. Santos took no time in giving a hard right overhand punch to Velasquez.
The impact was so devastating that the champion fell on the ground. This was an excellent opportunity for Santos as he started a series of hard punches on the fallen champion.
Referee John McCarthy had to interfere to save Velasquez from Santos’ onslaught. Santos won the first round and Velasquez was knocked out, awarding Santos the UFC heavyweight title for the first time.
In a news conference after the match, Velasquez said that "It was my fault…I didn’t pressure enough. The game plan was to go in there and pressure. I waited back too long. I was playing dos Santos’ game."
