There is a really bright "star" nearly directly overhead and can be easily seen at all hours of the night. I was just wondering if it is Venus or Jupiter.

  1. You will never see Venus right overhead.  Nor will you ever see Venus in the middle of the night.  From Earth, Venus lies in the general direction of the sun, so when Venus is overhead, so is the sun, which means it is daylight.  When we see Venus from earth, it is always just after dusk or just before dawn, and it is always near the horizon.

    You are seeing Jupiter.

  2. Venus is never seen directly overhead.

It's too near the sun for that.

  3. It was the planet, Jupiter. It is not Venus.

I saw it yesterday at 9:30pm, it was near the moon & I'm in Sydney.
