The Bayern Munich manager is elated with his team’s victory over this season’s relegation contenders as the Munich giants close the gap on Borussia Dortmund.
Jupp Heynckes has expressed pleasure at his team’s much needed win over this year’s relegation contenders, Kaiserslautern. Bayern played hosts to the Red Devils on Saturday, February 11, winning by a comfortable 2-0 margin. Mario
Gomez and Thomas Muller scored the goals for the home side.
Last season’s Golden Boot winner, Gomez, earned his side an early lead in the sixth minute which was soon doubled by Muller at the half hour mark. No team were able to add to the score line during the next 45 minutes as Bayern
secured all three points to close the gap on current leaders and reigning German champions, Borussia Dortmund.
The manager stated that the visitors played extremely well during the first period and applauded his players for dominating the game. Heynckes opined that this win justified his team’s depth and their ability to come back from
pressure situations. He insisted that it was a well deserved victory and urged his team to keep up with the impressive run in the future games.
While talking to the official club website after the game, the 66-year-old further added:
"It's proof of our upward trend. It was a fully merited win, and we played very good football at times. It was not easy in the first half, because Kaiserslautern defended extremely well, but we created some gilt-edged chances after
the break. We could have won by a lot more.”
Further commenting on his team’s impressive win, Heynckes stressed that his players combined extremely well to keep Kaiserslautern away from scoring. He reckons that Bayern are back to winning ways and the title race will run down
to the wire.
"I am especially pleased with the way we defended. We’ve kept another clean sheet and basically shut out the opposition. I’m delighted about that," the manager concluded.
Bayern are two points short of the Borussians from the top spot, and sit in second place at the moment with 13 games left until the end of the season.
