The Bundesliga giants have qualified for the quarter-finals of the DFB Pokal by beating VfL Bochum, and Jupp Heynckes is relieved after the victory.
Bayern Munich edged past the second-division side, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/VfL-Bochum-c40880, on Tuesday, December 20, to book a place in the quarter-finals of the DFB Pokal.
The hosts took the lead through http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Giovanni-c14985 Federico in the 26th minute, which was cancelled out by Mario Gomez’s strike in the second-half. Arjen Robben’s injury-time winner helped the Bavarian giants to a nervy win.
Despite having qualified for the quarter-finals, Bayern manager, Jupp Heynckes, believes that his side was lucky to win on Tuesday. He opined that Bochum showed great fight against a full strength Bayern team, and probably lost
due to their inexperience.
While talking to reporters after Tuesday’s win, the 66-year-old tactician added:
"We won it luckily at the end against a Bochum team who fought well and played well. All credit to [head coach] Andreas Bergmann’s players, who I think were outstandingly well-prepared and built superbly well from the back.”
The tactician admitted that the Unrelegatables played a great first-half, coming close to extending their lead on numerous occasions. However, Heynckes has advised the second-division outfit to work on its defence in order to grow
as a team.
"They made life very difficult for us, especially in the first half, and came at us time and again. I wasn’t happy with my team in the first half, even though we prepared well for the game. It was a typical cup tie, where the
underdogs rise above themselves."
The Bavarian giants have now gone for a well deserved winter break and will return to action against Borussia Monchengladbach later in January.
Bayern have had an impressive first-half of the 2011/12 season. The Reds have booked their place in the DFB Pokal quarter-finals and are also leading the Bundesliga standings with 37 points. The Bavarians have also qualified for
the first-knockout round of the UEFA Champions League and will face F.C Basel in February.
