The Bayern Munich manager is furious with his team’s disappointing performance in the draw and has called for improvement.
Jupp Heynckes believes that his side should have defeated Freiburg in order to remain on the heels of Borussia Dortmund. Bayern were surprisingly held for a dull draw by the bottom of the table side on Saturday, February 18, at
the badenova-Stadion as the match ended all square at 0-0.
The manager admitted that his players underestimated the opponents and that the display could have been better.
The former Bayer Leverkusen tactician opined that his team played extremely well during the second-half but were unlucky not to have scored. He stated that his players were looking forward to the game and were confident of achieving
all three points but Freiburg gave a decent account of their pace and energy.
He admitted that his team was way below par but assured of getting back to winning ways sooner rather later.
While talking during the post-match press conference, the 66-year-old tactician further added:
"We were sluggish in the first half. We obviously thought we’d succeed with pretty football. What we should have done is resist them energetically, we should have matched their approach, picked up the pace.”
As a result of this loss, Bayern find themselves third on the league standings with 45 points from 22 games. They are now four points adrift of current leaders, Borussia Dortmund, and one point behind Borussia Monchengladbach.
Heynckes elaborated that Bayern cannot afford to drop any more points in the Bundesliga considering the current form of the top two sides.
"In terms of the table, it’s two points dropped. The teams at the top are very stable, so normally, you can’t allow yourselves the kind of lapse we’ve suffered here," Heynckes concluded.
Bayern will be in action against http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Basel-c39079 in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday, February 22. The German giants will return to league action on Sunday, February 26, against fourth placed, Schalke. It is now up to Heynckes to
re-organise his ‘under-pressure’ team as Bayern’s title hopes are certainly on a slide.
