Jurgen Melzer destroys Rik De Voest in 2nd round – Malaysian Open 2011
Jurgen Melzer, Austrian, awestruck the Putra Stadium, Bukit Jalil, Kuala Lumpur as the spectators saw the world No.21 besieging his South African Challenger, Rik De Voest, in an hour and three minutes to win his 2nd round
match of the Malaysian Open with a bagel and 6-4.
Kicking off on Wednesday, 28th September, on Indoor hard court, the Austrian ruled out every chance for the South African to get into the round of 8. Although Melzer had less number of wins in his prior 10 match performance,
he was able to outdo the South African for a spot in the quarterfinals.
With the two walking into the amazing Indoor circuit, Voest started off serving first winning the service toss, however, that the most he could win in the start. The Austrian had a perfect start in the game. Breaking the world
No.129 in the opening game Melzer took the charge and went of serving next, 0-1.
Aged 30, Melzer went on extending his lead and did not stop at all. Serving and then break all the way in the game, the Austrian heard louder claps as he increased his scores without losing a game. Break-serve-breaking after 2-0,
Melzer came near to win the set with a bagel, 5-0.
Desolated and dismantled, the South African could not do anything but feel the misery rain on him. Serving out the final game of the set, the former world No.8 nailed the first set with a bagel and moved on to play set 2.
Serving for the opener, the South African fell short for the second time giving away a breakpoint to the Austrian, 0-1. Melzer on the other hand demonstrated a display of accurate volleys’ and net play combined with strong forehands.
The 30-year-old extended his lead to 2-0, before the South African opened up his side of the scoreboard winning game 3, 2-1. With the Austrian rushing away towards victory, Voest did try to break back; however, Melzer had a rock
solid defence and went on swirling to the top.
Winning games on respective serve, the scores reached up to 5-4 before Melzer finished off serving out the final game of the match winning the set 6-4 and the match in straight sets.
Through to the quarter-finals, Melzer will now face another former world No.8, Marcos Baghdatis to battle it out for the semis seat.
