Jurgen Melzer dismisses Carlos Berlocq to reach round two – Valencia Open 2012
Austrian top ranked star, Jurgen Melzer, got the better of the Argentinean challenger, Carlos Berlocq, in straight sets at the Valencia Open 2012 on Tuesday. He nudged up a 6-3, 6-3 success over the 29-year-old to charge into the second round at this indoor
hard court event held in Valencia, Spain.
The former world number eight, Melzer showed exceptional skills to outclass Berlocq in their first encounter at the Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències. After earning the glory in one hour and 50 minutes, the Austrian took lead in the FedEx ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) Head 2 Head Series by 1-0 against Berlocq and secured a place in the round of 16.
Melzer made a thunderous entry at this ATP World Tour 500 Series event. He drew the first blood in the fourth game and jumped to a 4-1 lead. The Austrian then held his composure and bagged his remaining serves, eventually clicking the opener with a 6-3 success.
Currently ranked 38th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Melzer kept momentum floating towards the second set. He got the desiderated break in the opening game and took the initial lead. Despite squandering his edge in the very
next game, the Austrian went on a three game tear and leaped to a 4-1 lead. Melzer lost his serve again in the sixth game but remained calm, subsequently bagging the set with a 6-3 win with another break of serve.
On the whole, Melzer dominated throughout the clash. He fired four aces and spilled equal number of double faults as opposed to the Argentine. The Austrian veteran clobbered a better first serve share of 56 per cent in contrast with his opponent’s 51 per
cent and amazingly clicked 25 out of 42 points on it.
Melzer will face off the Belgian contender, Xavier Malisse, who recorded a 3-1 retirement victory against second seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga.
The French number one gifted away his opening serve and consequently fell at 1-3. However, he was forced to retire with a lower back pain after that, eventually rewarding a second round spot to Malisse.
