Jurgen Melzer downs Martin Fischer to enter the main draw – PBZ Zagreb Indoors 2012
In an all-Austrian clash, qualifying top seed Jurgen Melzer dumped Martin Fischer in straight sets at the PBZ Zagreb Indoors 2012 on Monday. He clobbered a 6-3, 6-4 victory against his 25-year-old compatriot to book a spot in the main draw at this ATP (Association
of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 series event taking place on the hard courts in Zagreb, Croatia.
The highest ranked player of the qualifying competition at the Dom Sportova proved his class by dumping his compatriot in straight sets in an hour and eight minutes long marathon. He not only conquered Fischer in their first meeting but also booked a place
in this $416,000 event.
World number 41, Melzer, nervously entered the Croatian courts and suffered the first blow in the opening game. However, he not only recovered in the very next game but converted another break opportunity in the sixth game to take a 4-2 lead. The Austrian
then exchanged a break and held his serve in the last game to clinch the opener with a 6-3 score line.
The 30-year-old Austrian carried his winning ways in the following set. After Fischer held his serve in the first game, Melzer unleashed his skills and stroke out the following three games in a row. Later, the veteran cashed in another break chance in the
seventh game and further solidified his position in the set. Regardless of losing his serve in the following game, he kept his serve once more and sealed the set by winning six games to four.
Summing up the seed’s performance, Melzer blocked six out of nine breakpoints he faced and capitalised on five out of eight break chances. He also formulated a lower first serve share of 68 percent as compared to his compatriot’s 72 and smacked six massive
aces.
Melzer will be joined by the fourth seed, Matteo Viola, in the main draw. The Italian lost his serve four times but broke Dusan Lajovic’s serve seven times, sealing the deal with a 6-4, 6-2 score line in 80 minutes. He formulated a lower first serve share
but amazingly clinched 23 out of 34 points on it.
