Jurgen Melzer sends Albert Montanes home in three-setter at the 2011 Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell
Austrian tennis player Jurgen Melzer recorded yet another impressive win on clay today, defeating Spanish tennis pro and eleventh seed Albert Montanes at the 2011 Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell. It was not an easy victory for the sixth seed, as Montanes managed to defeat him in the first set. However, Melzer put in his best and fought his way up from a set down to win the match with a final score-line of 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-2. The match lasted for a little over two hours and three minutes.
Melzer and Montanes began the match on an almost equal footing, with the Spanish player taking a bit of a lead in the beginning. He scored five aces in the first set alone, and did not commit any double faults. This helped the pro to take a significant lead, as he won the first set 7-6(2) after taking eight points more than the Austrian.
Although the Spaniard took the first set easily, Melzer retaliated just as the second set started. He scored two aces and broke his opponent twice, winning 56 per cent of the points to take the second set 6-3 and re-establish himself as a formidable contender in the match. Jurgen Melzer went on to the third set of the match, and scored three aces and broke Albert Montanes twice to take an even stronger lead in the match. By the end of the match, he won the set 6-2 and recovered from his first set defeat to win the match 6-7(2), 6-3, 6-2.
The player also produced good results at Monte Carlo, and says, “I’m happy with my clay-court season so far, reaching the semis in Monte Carlo and then being already in the quarterfinal here. I’ve been beating good players lately on clay and my confidence is high.”
Jurgen Melzer will be facing fourth seed David Ferrer in the quarterfinals of this tournament, and it will be his second meeting with the player in just one week. Ferrer defeated Romanian tennis player Victor Hanescu to reach this stage of the tournament.
