Jurgen Melzer slams down Guillermo Garcia in second round – Erste Bank Open 2011
Jurgen Melzer, Austrian world No.25, hammered his second round challenger of Erste Bank Open 2011, Guillermo Garcia, Spanish world No.68, in straight sets, 7-5, 6-1, in an hour and 23 minutes hard indoor circuit match on Thursday, 27th of October.
Playing at Wiener Stadthalle, Vienna, Austria, local lad had a greater support because of his home ground. Adding to that, Melzer had a better idea of the circuit as well. Battling out head-to-head for the third time, Melzer managed to lead the rivalry winning the second round match of the ATP World Tour 250 event. Walking down the blue indoor circuit, the two warmed up followed by the local lad winning the toss and opening the fixture.
Flaring up with the match starter, Melzer, world No.25, opened up the scoreboard winning his opening serve, 1-0. Garcia followed up with a winner and levelled up the scores at 1-1 switching the serve back to Austrian veteran. The 30-year-old continued with his serve and bagged game 3 to lead, 2-1.
Levelling up every time the Austrian took the lead, the Spaniard repeatedly equalled up first at 2-2, then at 3-3, 4-4 and finally at 5-5. With just two more games required for either of the two to win the set, Melzer blazed away as he served out game 11, 6-5, with a triple game point winner and broke his rival again with a triple set point winner to win the set, 7-5, and led the match, 1-0.
Down and losing, Garcia tried his luck in the second set, however, could not match the higher ranked Austrian. Starting off with serving first, Melzer washed away the set opener, 1-0, and broke the lower ranked Spaniard, world No.68, to lead the set with two straight wins, 2-0.
Extending his lead to 3-0, the veteran continued to dominate with super forehand winners and smashes. Cutting down the lead, the 28-year-old Spaniard finally won his first game of set two and switched the serve back, 3-1. Manoeuvring game 5 in his favour, 4-1, Melzer maintained his three games lead and was left out with just two more wins to finish off the set.
Garcia continued serving game six, however, was unable to match the Austrian’s capabilities and broke down, 5-1. Serving for the match, Melzer nearly gave away a breakpoint, however, came forth winning set two, 6-1, ousting the Spaniard in the second round of the ATP World Tour 250 event in straight sets.
Making his way into the quarter-final of the Erste Bank Open 2011, Melzer now moves to play the sixth seed, Kevin Anderson, South African, to battle out the semis seat on Friday, 28th October.
