Jurgen Melzer undoes Marcel Granollers in the second round of the Barcelona Open
Austrian tennis player Jurgen Melzer scored an easy win over Spanish tennis player Marcel Granollers, defeating his second round opponent in straight sets at the 2011 Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell. The match was a very easy one
for Melzer, who has been on a hot streak this month. The player defeated Granollers 6-1, 6-3, taking less than an hour and twenty-five minutes to make his way into the third round of the ATP World Tour 500 tournament.
The Austrian player recently defeated clay court expert Nicolas Almagro of Spain, and former World Number 1 Roger Federer at the 2011 ATP World Tour Masters 1000 Monte Carlo last week. These are significant victories for the player,
and he seems to have reached the zenith of his career, albeit a little late at the age of 29.
The first set of the tournament was an extremely easy one for Melzer, who committed one double fault and avoided any break points in this half. He also broke Granollers thrice out of six opportunities, and won 31 out of 49 first
set points for a percentage of 63. This helped Melzer to win the first set 6-1, giving him a considerable advantage over Granollers early on in the match.
Marcel Granollers tried his best to atone for his abysmal appearance in the first set, and succeeded in breaking the World Number 8 in the second set. His efforts were, however, not enough to make up for the points he lost in the
first set, and Melzer successfully broke him two times in the second set to further destroy his hopes of a third-round showing. By the end of the match, Melzer was in possession of a whopping 60 per cent of the total points played. The final score-line was
6-1, 6-3 in Melzer’s favour.
The Austrian tennis player will be facing French qualifier Benoit Paire in the third round of the clay event, after Paire defeated eleventh seed Albert Montanes in his last match at the 2011 Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell.
