Jurgen Zopp beats Mischa Zverev 6-2, 1-6, 6-1
13th seed, Jurgen Zopp of Estonia, bounced back after getting thrashed in the second set to undo Mischa Zverev of Germany 6-2, 1-6, 6-1 in the first qualifier at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, USA on Tuesday.
The Estonian took just an hour and 23 minutes to beat his opponent.
Zopp was the first to take lead, snatching breaks in the third and fifth game of the first set and going ahead 5-1. The Estonian capitalised on the double and served it out at 5-2.
After losing the first set easily, Zverev completely changed his game. The German started to play aggressively and it paid dividends as he raced to a 3-0 lead. Zverev made another breakthrough in the sixth game and bagged the set
6-1.
Zopp did not get disappointed and kept fighting. The Estonian responded in the same way and built a 3-0 lead in the decider. He allowed Zverev to claim only one game and grabbed the set 6-1.
The 23-year-old clinched 30 of the 37 first serve and 11 of the 21 second return points in the match.
Zopp will face Rhyne Williams of USA in the second round of the qualifying draw. The American upset seventh seed Marsel Ilhan in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 in the previous match.
Michael Yani defeats Ricardo Mello 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-0
World number 189 Michael Yani upset 12th seed Ricardo Mello in three sets 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-0 to advance to the second round of the qualifying draw.
Yani did not face much difficulty in securing the first set the American needed a single break of serve to seal it 6-3.
Mello and Yani exchanged two breaks in the first eight games of the second set to tie the scores at 4-4. Both men held their serves in the next four games to square off the score at 6-6. A tie-breaker was forced, where the Brazilian
took an early lead and consolidated on it to win 7-6(5).
Yani surprised everyone with the high level of his game in the final set. The American was flawless, as he did not lose even a single game and broke Mello three times to seal it 6-0.
Both players hit a high number of double faults. Yani committed five of them but Mello went one step ahead with six. The match lasted for two hours and two minutes.
The American is pitted against 16th seed, Marinko Matosevic of Australia, in the second qualifier.
